The Microsoft Download Manager solves these potential problems. You might not be able to pause the active downloads or resume downloads that have failed. (You would have the opportunity to download individual files on the "Thank you for downloading" page after completing your download.)įiles larger than 1 GB may take much longer to download and might not download correctly. In this case, you will have to download the files individually. You may not be able to download multiple files at the same time. If you do not have a download manager installed, and still want to download the file(s) you've chosen, please note: Stand-alone download managers also are available, including the Microsoft Download Manager.

Many web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 9, include a download manager. If you don't mind that, then you'll probably enjoy this basic utility.Generally, a download manager enables downloading of large files or multiples files in one session. However, FreeFileSync Portable doesn't do much to compete with more advanced backup programs that let you do more with your files. It's easy to use and makes backing up your files relatively painless. If you don't currently use a backup utility, this isn't a bad one to choose. The program's interface is fairly responsive and easy to browse, but the glossy buttons seemed a little cheesy to us. There aren't any options to delete duplicate files or compress the files to save space on your drive. FreeFileSync Portable doesn't offer many ways to customize your backup, other than choosing to mirror the backup or select certain folders. In addition to choosing any folder on your computer, you can choose an attached drive or memory card, if you want. This program gives you two separate drop-down lists: one to choose the folder of files you want to copy and another to choose the destination folder.

It makes it easier to carry them on a portable drive, after all. That's not massive by any means, but portable programs tend to be less than 1MB. Though this includes portable right in the name, it checks in at 24MB. Still, if you just want a slightly better version of Windows' drag-and-drop system, this program will probably meet your needs. FreeFileSync Portable lets you compare and synchronize files and folders, but it doesn't offer much in the way of advanced goodies as there's no way to compress, re-organize, or clean up your files as you're copying them.
